INDRA JATRA

Indra Jatra is 8 days long festival that is celebrated in September. It is one of the most exciting festivals of the Newari community in Kathmandu Valley. This festival marks the starting of a month-long festival season of autumn. First day begins with the erection of a wooden pole made of pine at Basantapur Sqaure in front of the old Hanuman Dhoka Palace.

For the pole-raising ceremony, hundreds of spectators gather at the Palace Square and on the surrounding temples. The chariot of the Living Goddess - "Goddess Kumari", is taken out in a procession through the main streets of Kathmandu. Lakhey dance is one of the attraction of this festival which is performed by masked dancers known as Lakhay. The Living Goddess’ chariot procession is the most awaited funciton to be carried out in this festival which attracts all the locals and the foreigners to catch a glimpse of the divine little Newari girl who has been deified as goddess Kumari. The chariot of the Kumari is followed by two other chariots carrying a representative of Ganesh and Bhairav and taken to different parts of Kathmandu. The festival of Indra Jatra ends with the lowering of the (lingam) pole bearing Indra's flag.

This year Indra Jatra is being celebrated from the 5th September. Shaping Minds Group wishes everyone a glorious and happy festival 'Indra Jatra'.

The Simplified Student Visa Framework explained

- Australia's simplified student visa framework (SSVF) came into effect on July 1st 2016. The following changes were introduced:

- international students will apply for a single Student visa (subclass 500), regardless of their chosen course of study

- student guardians will apply for the new Student Guardian visa (subclass 590)

- all students and student guardians will generally be required to lodge their visa application online by creating an account in ImmiAccount (opens in a new window)

- A new Student Document Checklist Tool on the DIBP website will allow students to check their financial and English language evidentiary requirements before applying for their visa. It will list all countries and all providers by their trading name and CRICOS code.

- The SSVF is designed to make the process of applying for a student visa simpler to navigate - and without paper!
